Different Forms of Glaucoma

Open-angle and closed-angle glaucoma are the two most common forms. Open-angle is characterized by optic nerve damage due to increased interocular pressure. There are no initial symptoms of open-angle glaucoma, but a person can lose peripheral vision as pressure increases.

Closed-angle glaucoma is less common and is characterized by fluid not draining from the eyes. Symptoms include pain, nausea, vomiting, blurry vision, and halos. Acute glaucoma is an emergency, and it must be treated immediately.

Glaucoma affects the peripheral vision first, and if it is not controlled it can result in tunnel vision. Progression of the disease will eventually affect the central vision and lead to complete blindness.

Glaucoma Treatment

There is not a cure for glaucoma, but it can be treated. Early detection is vital since it will allow our optometrist to preserve your eyesight. Standard treatment for glaucoma includes prescription eye drops. They can help decrease the amount of fluid in your eyes or improve the flow. A comprehensive eye exam can help us decide which treatment options will work best for you.

Diagnosing Glaucoma

Glaucoma is diagnosed by a thorough eye exam and specific tools and assessment. Some of them include:

  • Tonometer: This tool measures the internal eye pressure based on your eye's resistance to a puff of air.
  • Visual Field Test: A computerized map of your visual field to measure peripheral vision.
  • Optic Disc Exam: Non-invasive tool to take images of the retina and optic nerve.

Preventing Glaucoma

Glaucoma cannot be prevented entirely, but routine eye exams are the best way to minimize vision loss. Early detection is essential for the preservation of your vision. Other lifestyle changes include eating a healthy diet, exercising, limiting caffeine, controlling your blood pressure, and maintaining good oral health.
